If you've surfed the island or seen some beautiful photos of it, chances are you've seen Pete Heather’s work. Pete’s a local photographer capturing the island's shifting moods throughout the seasons. His lens is most often trained on the water, from glassy mornings to wild, stormy days when big seas smash the island cliffs. A close friend of Rapanui, Pete’s photo's give a glimpse into island life.
As autumn turns to winter, we asked Pete to share a selection of his favourite photos that capture the natural rhythm of the changing seasons. He shared some words about each.

The Final Moments
I can’t explain it, the final few moments before the sun dips below the horizon is always something special. At this time of year one of my favourite places for a good sundowner session is from Yarmouth Pier.
The Road Home
This view gets me every time. No matter weather rain, wind, sun or sometimes even snow, the view is never the same. Have you ever tried driving up the hill and not looking back in the wing mirror? I for one can’t as the landscape, light and sky are always changing, especially in the autumn and winter seasons.
The Waiting Game
The time between waves is always a special thing. Here, two surfers discuss life’s unanswered questions, or most probably and amount of waves they’ve caught. All under the specular backdrop of Tennyson Down.

Stoked
If you're a surfer this face says it all. The waves don’t have to be 5 foot plus and clean to give you that stoked feeling, just catching a wave or even being in the sea will do.
Line 'em Up
September through to April is my favourite time of year. When the Atlantic ocean wakes up and fires long range groundswell up through the channel to the island the waves can be epic. There’s no better feeling when you drive along the coast and see lines of waves hitting the beaches, even more so when under an autumnal sunset.
Early Doors
Who needs a hot tub when you can swim in the sea? Warmed over the summer, then met with the cold air of Autumn - perfect conditions for a dip.
Coastal Paths
When the summer crowds disappear, the island becomes more relaxed, making it a perfect time to explore along the coast. This path meanders towards Freshwater Bay bathed in the late afternoon sun.
Offshore Freeride
When those swells arrive and if the wind is offshore this is where I’ll be. If not in the water, I’ll be taking photos of many island surfers. Here, a local rips into a wave at Freshwater Bay.
