We\u2019ve learnt over the last couple of years of lockdowns that mental health is to be valued as much as physical health. Being locked indoors really highlighted that. Lockdown was a physical thing, but being outdoors - not just exercising but being in and around nature, and friends - is good for the old wellbeing because it feels like a bit of a refresh. Chemically, maybe it is.\u00a0All the chemicals that are produced when we get stimulated were not designed for the internet age.<\/p>

We have Fight or Flight to respond to tigers, not TikTok.<\/p><\/blockquote>

Maybe that\u2019s why wild swimming has grown in popularity so much recently. Outwardly it looks\u2026 well.. .a bit nuts. But people do it for the way it makes you feel. There are different techniques. You might be a dunker or a ditherer, full dunk, half dunk with or without neoprene. What everyone who has tried cold water swimming will agree on though is the sense of cold water peeling away stress and tension like the layers of an onion. The invigorating, almost hot-to-the-touch feel of your skin afterward.<\/p>

The same effect can be had with an ice-cold shower if you want, of course. But in a cold shower, you miss out on the sand, the sunrise, the sounds of the birds. And company. Not saying you couldn\u2019t take your mates in a cold shower but they\u2019d need to be very close friends indeed. And the fresh air, and peace of mind. Because out there, with no phone to bother you. Just the sound of the sea, you can \u2026 relax. Be you<\/em> again. Just for that moment, before you start the day. But in a better way.<\/p>
