Over time, strangers began joining her. First one or two, then dozens.

Today, the Dipping Society meets every Sunday morning on the Isle of Wight. Rain or shine. Midwinter or midsummer. The ritual is always the same: gather by the beach hut, swim together, share tea and biscuits, and reconnect with the sea - and each other.

The Dipping Society wears organic cotton surf towels

We joined Madi and the crew just after sunrise. The tide was pulling gently over the sand, and the beach was already humming with chat and nervous energy - the usual mix of excitement and chill that comes with cold water swimming.

Back in 2018, Madi and her friend Kim began their daily dips to cope with loss. “You feel helpless when you’re going through grief,” Madi said. “We just wanted to do something.”

That “something” became 365 consecutive days in the sea. From warm summer evenings to freezing February mornings, they swam through it all.

“You become so connected. Things like the tide, the moon - you just start syncing with it. The sea was always a place of solace, but during that year, it became something deeper. Like checking in with a good friend.”

During those early dips, people started to ask if they could join - friends at first, then strangers, then friends of strangers. “They wanted to swim, but didn’t want to go alone. So we just said, ‘We’ll be here Sunday at 9am.’ And they came.”

Now, up to 25 people show up every Sunday. Everyone has a different reason for coming, but there’s a shared sense of accountability - both to the sea and to each other. “It’s easy to stay in bed,” Madi said. “But knowing people are waiting for you makes you get up, show up, and get in.”

Beyond the swims, the group has also found its voice. In 2022, they joined protests along the Solent against sewage pollution in the sea - supported by Rapanui. “Sea swimmers are some of the first to notice when something’s not right,” Madi said. “We’re literally in the water. We feel it, see it, smell it.”

She now brings her daughters to the protests, helping to nurture their connection to the ocean. “They might not remember all the science, but they’ll remember standing on the beach with a giant inflatable poo,” she laughed. “And maybe that’s enough, for now.”

We braved the water alongside them - towels off, breath held, laughter rising. The sun was just starting to dip below the horizon, casting a soft glow over the sea.

This is what the Dipping Society is really about: community, connection, and cold water courage. A ritual born from grief, grown into something much more. And while it might have started with two people and a personal mission, it now offers something universal - a reason to get up, get in, and look after what matters.

With our “customise” feature, you have almost limitless options to make our products your own and add your personal touch.
Nearly everything in the world is made in a linear model where resources are taken out of the ground then turned into products designed to be thrown ‘away’- wherever that is.
